Covid continues to keep some people away, but for those who did attend it was another great RBS Breakfast session.
New Member Announcement
After a couple of visits, Frank from Frankli Better Service has decided to make it official and has joined RBS Breakfast Club. Once we get a little more info from Frank we’ll set him up his own page on the site and share a bit more info.
In the meantime, thank you to Sharyn for the introduction.
Does Every Business Need a “Story’?
We had a great discussion about whether or not every business needs to have a ‘Story’. Some argued that even for a boring or commodity business, a story around why the business exists, or what makes them unique can make a difference. Others argued that for some businesses, it doesn’t really matter to the customer why the business exists, or why the founders are so passionate about the industry. All that matters is that it’s a good quality product at a good price. Everyone agreed though, that competing only on price is generally a race to the bottom.
Personally, I believe that if your business is the type of product that people would talk about at a family BBQ, then a brand story can be really helpful. Peel Manor House is a great example of this, as it’s an experience that people will want to share with their friends. Stonehenge Ceramics is another great example. Tiles may not be that exciting, but if you visit a friend and they’ve just had their kitchen re-tiled, you’re going to hear about it! So, for businesses like these, taking an active role in telling your story is important. People will be interested in hearing about it.

But if you sell a commodity like a ladder, it’s not exactly something you’re going to find people talking about weeks later.
So, should businesses with a boring product spend time sharing their story? Perhaps not, but sharing your staff members’ story is worth considering. We’ve all been in a position where we’ve been buying something fairly mundane, but the salesperson made an impact. If you’re lucky enough to have staff like that, perhaps you can tell their story. A great salesperson can take a boring product and make it less about the product and more about the customer. That’s when you’ll stop competing on price.

Doesn’t matter if it’s a home-based business, or employs dozens of people. The members of RBS come from a variety of backgrounds, industries, and business sizes. That’s what makes the advice, ideas, brainstorming, and collaboration so successful.
